I'm not exactly sure who said it in the first place, but the one I've heard it from was Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell is such a sweet actress, and I mean her mad acting skillz). A saying that tells of the aforementioned pitfalls and how to avoid them:
„Draw from your past, but don't let your past draw from you.“
And I think that's how it's said best.
